WINEMONOLITH

The pre-determined process of wine making is built in a linear program. Grape harvest - Mashing the grapes - Fermentation - Pressing - Filling the barrels - Aging - Filtering - Filling - Storage - Presentation and sales.

The goal is to integrate a concise architectural program of 3500 m2 into the area. It should appear neither too noticeable nor expressive, since the premises is on a plateau between the vineyards of Bruttig-Fankel, which offers a wide panorama with a view of the Mosel and the natural surrounding landscape. Furthermore, it is similar to an agricultural construction.

The 50 cm thick insulating concrete exterior which resembles the scanty rocks of the surrounding area, is similarly characterized on the inside of the building by the exposed concrete walls and ceilings. The polished stone finish gives the rooms a brittle, puristic character.

The monolithic building is divided in the middle in order to take a closer look at the panorama, which is given special attention by a viewing platform. This division forms a view to the furthest visible point on the horizon, and at the same time functions as an entrance into the building. A double glass wall provides a peek into the production areas and the barrique barrel storage. Visitors enter the vinotheque through a bridge that runs over the barrel storage. The vinotheque is equipped with a large U-shaped bar for wine tasting. In addition to catering, a shop floor also finds its place. For guided tours, visitors reach the production rooms of the winery through a long staircase from the vinotheque to the barrique barrel store.

Due to the topography, the production of the wine is made with a pump-free mechanism by using the natural gravitation. The production rooms run through the entire building like a production line.
